Northern Light: National identity in Scandinavian painting c.1870-1920

This term’s talk will be given by Christina Sanderson, who obtained her
MPhil in History of Art from Cambridge and worked at Bonhams auctioneers
for 6 years specialising in eighteenth and nineteenth century paintings.
She now works for a London based art dealers and gives various talks on
Scandinavian art.

At a time when the idea of the nation-state was prevalent across Europe,
Christina Sanderson will look at how artists in the Scandinavian countries
forged a Nordic identity through painting by turning to history, folklore,
literature and the unique Scandinavian landscape and light. Artists
reviewed include Carl Larsson and Prince Eugen from Sweden, Akseli
Gallen-Kallela from Finland, Carl Holsoe and Peder Severin Kroyer from
Denmark and Edvard Munch from Norway.
